  • Last time I blogged about our painting area I didn’t really show any pictures of Tuesday in on the action… that’s because it is so hard to get photos of my little artist and not have paint end up everywhere. I did get a lot of questions about it though, so I thought I would share a few more tips and tricks, along with our action shots 🙂

One thing I always do is paint with Tuesday. Our paintings are collaborations right now. I love working this way because Tuesday cares more about the process and I’d like something we can use and enjoy. In order for her painting to work with my aesthetic I’ve decided that not leaving any white spots is important. Over time this happens naturally, but when faced with a white canvas I do work to cover any little empty spaces in the first session (including the edges). We always have out 3-5 canvases so she can put a mark here or there, and see what the same paint looks like on different backgrounds. Tuesday has never objected to me painting on the same canvases as her, as soon as she does I think we’ll start having our own to work on individually.  As I mentioned in the previous post I got the idea for having Tuesday work with one color family at a time from the Little Blue Boo blog. It really is great because picking out and organizing her paint is one of Tuesday’s favorite parts of the process.

Since Tuesday is only two (right now almost 28 months) she doesn’t like to sit and do one single thing for long. So for her just simply putting paint on a canvas is not enough of an activity. Picking out the paint and sorting it is a big part of the fun and learning. We talk about the colors and shades, what is lighter and darker, and she can see what happens when she mixes them.  She almost always wants to get out white to see what that will do with a color, but I don’t always let her get it out since she doesn’t seem to want to paint with the color it makes.

I don’t like to have extra paint in our up-cycled meat trays when we are done. This can be tricky because, as with any project these days, when she is done she is DONE. I’ve found that introducing other elements can help extend painting time (usually our whole session only lasts 30 minutes, often times much less). At least I can get my brush full of paint while she’s exploring and try to use it up. This is important because you don’t want to put a lot of acrylic paint down the drain. I do rinse what is left on these trays and re-use them.

In addition to other things to paint (like the wooden eggs—see this post) I give her other things to manipulate the paint with. Plastic pallet knifes and old gift cards are fun because you can carve back into wet paint. Great for pre-writters, and I’d bet learning to write kids as well.

I’ve come up with a few other things to make putting paint on the canvas enticing. Shown above I added big circles that Tuesday can fill in. She is really into me drawing shapes or lines so that she can color in and around them. I’m not sure if it’s a developmental thing but I find it really interesting. She almost always prefers to color on something that has lines on it already versus a blank piece of paper, a complete 180 from a few months ago where she would make one mark and then need a fresh page. Another thing I’ve done is add texture. So far I just put a little gel medium in with the paint and really glob it on so it will be bumpy when it dries. I also found a stucco paint on clearance that I’m going to mix in and try.
    Remember:

art is messy (pants I made Tuesday with the Silhouette and pom-pom trim). It’s supposed to be messy. So just have a full change of clothes (you and your kid!), including socks, and you should be good to go.

  • Especially last Saturday as our favorite people from Alaska were down to visit (and are still here, yay!). Tuesday got to see a sleeping Chloe when her mom and grandma stopped by to pick up a highchair and travel crib on their way in from the airport. This was so NOT COOL MAMA! She wanted to see the real live moving around and having fun Chloe who we talk to all the time on the computer (via a logitech application). When we told her Chloe would be at the Saturday market she was just busting. The market is the highlight of her week as it is so this just sent her into a super happy place. And when she caught site of Chloe?

She wouldn’t stop hugging and kissing her… until she knocked her over (whoops!). We got to walk around with Carmen, Chloe, and her grandparents for a while and got some yummy food. We ate in front of live music, because the market is in full swing now.

    Dance party!!!!
After the exhausted girls went down for naps Carmen and I went with our moms to the spring version of Crafty Wonderland (I guess I failed to blog it, but my friends Kristen and Sciarrino both blogged about our fun time in December). This time I bought less and took more photos.

A lot of the vendors were the same, including this one: Muluk. I know many of you wanted to know where I got Tuesday’s red and white stripped hat in these photos, well it’s from here!

Carmen and I both had one thing we had to find: gifts for our moms (and yes, they were with us, so we had to be stealth). We zoned in on the jewelry right away. I loved all these earrings at Betsy and Iya (oh no, I thought I got her card, Carmen do you remember?). Carmen ended up with a fun pair from the half off rack. Check out this action shot.

She put them on right away, of course. I SO SO SO need to get my ears re-peirced! This was another great booth, again I’ll have to get the name from Carmen (she bought the necklace she’s holding from her mom). It’s Seaworthy

This one I do remember: Sarah Treslstad Jewelry Design. I got my mom the beautiful necklace she is wrapping up.

We saw lots more than jewelry though, like this booth with interesting yarn. She has spun stuff, but this was actually a combo of a lot of yarns tied together.

Row Boat Press was one of my favorites during the holiday show and they didn’t disappoint this time. I picked up a new print of theirs that says, “You’re my best friend” for Bj.

Another favorite booth of mine, Trusty Sidekick. I didn’t get anything this time, but Tuesday wore one of her capes and shirts for her second birthday at Disneyland. I mentioned that her etsy shop didn’t have a lot of colors to choose from, she told me that she is happy to take custom orders, so check it out!

I did end up getting Tuesday two things. Felt pancakes from Pickle Things. My pancake loving daughter thought they were the coolest. I also picked up five stained glass pendants for the play space downstairs. Megan from Ta-Dah let me pick out any five pendants and then strung them together for me. I love them so much (ok maybe this was a little bit for me too)!

I didn’t get anything just for me, though I was tempted by these beautiful repurposed vintage wears from Glam Garb. She dyes, refurbishes, and embellishes vintage delicates. I wanted one of those petticoats bad. I just have to figure out how I could pull off the look…
I know this is craft fair season just about everywhere, so look up to see if you have one nearby. I recommend it for custom and unique gifts, decor, jewelry, toys, and fashion. Support local artists and buy local and handmade, it’s great all around!

  • So on national scrapbook day I didn’t actually scrapbook. I’ve got a pretty serious tea party coming up and am currently consumed with making Tuesday the cutest dress up skirt ever, so fun. I do have a scrapbook related thing to share. I finally set about to organize my mists.

I actually did this a few weeks ago, in anticipation of buying a few more at a sale, so I had to put them on a bigger jump ring. It’s hanging on my board in my studio and making me very happy. Some of these are Glimmer Mists so they catch the light and sparkle.

This was really easy to do. I simply cut 2 inch squares out of my favorite cardstock: white orange peel texture Bazzill and kraft cardstock. I figured they were the ones I used the most and the mist would show up so different on each that I should have samples of both. I was random with the amount I sprayed on the paper, but I went to a local scrapbook store that had one spray on one side and three on the other, a really good idea. After they dried overnight I wrote the name of the mist on the back and punched a hole for stringing onto a large binder ring.

Now that I have this done I am using my mists more than ever. I just sprayed a bunch of white paper flowers and am going to try to work them into cute hair clips for tutu. Now I just have to work on getting some kind of system down for my stamping ink.
How about you, did you do anything for national scrapbook day?
