I wish it was more interesting

But basically I’ve been sick. Boo! Actually Tuesday was sick (and is getting better) and now I’m sick. But you know, when your kid is sick life shuts down more than when you are sick. When does a parent have time to be sick anyway?

The other things taking up my time were fabulous things. Carmen, Andrew and Chloe were back visiting. They stayed with her parents, but we did have a house guest of our own this last week. The oh so sweet Maria from Denmark. Maria’s sister was a dear friend. She was our exchange student my senior year of high school and passed away after a battle with cancer seven years ago. She had just visited us in the states and those of you who knew me way back when on 2 peas may remember this memorial album I made. I’m so happy to say that now I can call Maria a friend in her own right and I hope for many more of her visits and some of our family going to Europe. You could not ask for a better guest. We ate at food carts (and lots of other yummy places, I had to show her everything!), visited local attractions, watched movies and just hung out. It was fabulous. I’m coming down off the high of having so many people here I love. I don’t think that Tuesday quite realizes they won’t be back tomorrow…

Photographing kids art

There are lots of great ideas on how to store kids art and how to pick what you are going to keep out of the mass amounts of art they make. I have to admit to hardly keeping any of Tuesday’s art… in it’s original form. It’s not that I don’t want to; most often what happens is that we reuse the art for something else. Either a base of the next art project, or we turn paintings and drawings into journal covers, gift tags, and scrapbook backgrounds. With Tuesday’s large acrylic paintings on canvas I know we are not going to keep them all because right now we’re working on gift paintings. The ones we do keep will probably end up painted over many times (I should know, half of them have my old paintings underneath!). I really want to preserve this moment in her artistic journey though so I’ve made a habit of pulling out her artwork and photographing it.

Her canvases are always changing (we work on these together. I posted some tips here and here) because I she paints on the same ones over and over. I like to take them upstairs in the afternoon when light is coming in through the sliding door (that you can’t see, to the left of this photo) on a sunny day. This way I have consistent light, but it’s not harsh and direct. I may just lean the paintings up like this and snap a few shots (1/200 sec at f/ 1.8, ISO 640, 35mm 1.8 lens).

I’ll also put the paintings on the floor and hop up on a chair to lean over and get the painting with out anything cluttering up the background (1/80 sec at f 1.8, ISO 200, 35mm 1.8 lens).
But by far my favorite thing to do is lean them up in great (indirect) light and get close up detail shots. I love seeing all her marks this way.

(all above shots 1/60 – 1/100 sec at f 1.8, ISO 200, 35mm 1.8 lens) That last one is my desktop wallpaper and I love it so so so much. Ohhhh I just had a genius idea to do notecards out of these! You could also print and frame these as is. Of the above all have been painted over at least a little so I’m so glad to have these shots. Celebrate your little artist and snap some photos of their work today!

More tips for painting with kids

Last time I blogged about our painting area I didn’t really show any pictures of Tuesday in on the action… that’s because it is so hard to get photos of my little artist and not have paint end up everywhere. I did get a lot of questions about it though, so I thought I would share a few more tips and tricks, along with our action shots 🙂

One thing I always do is paint with Tuesday. Our paintings are collaborations right now. I love working this way because Tuesday cares more about the process and I’d like something we can use and enjoy. In order for her painting to work with my aesthetic I’ve decided that not leaving any white spots is important. Over time this happens naturally, but when faced with a white canvas I do work to cover any little empty spaces in the first session (including the edges). We always have out 3-5 canvases so she can put a mark here or there, and see what the same paint looks like on different backgrounds. Tuesday has never objected to me painting on the same canvases as her, as soon as she does I think we’ll start having our own to work on individually.  As I mentioned in the previous post I got the idea for having Tuesday work with one color family at a time from the Little Blue Boo blog. It really is great because picking out and organizing her paint is one of Tuesday’s favorite parts of the process.

Since Tuesday is only two (right now almost 28 months) she doesn’t like to sit and do one single thing for long. So for her just simply putting paint on a canvas is not enough of an activity. Picking out the paint and sorting it is a big part of the fun and learning. We talk about the colors and shades, what is lighter and darker, and she can see what happens when she mixes them.  She almost always wants to get out white to see what that will do with a color, but I don’t always let her get it out since she doesn’t seem to want to paint with the color it makes.

I don’t like to have extra paint in our up-cycled meat trays when we are done. This can be tricky because, as with any project these days, when she is done she is DONE. I’ve found that introducing other elements can help extend painting time (usually our whole session only lasts 30 minutes, often times much less). At least I can get my brush full of paint while she’s exploring and try to use it up. This is important because you don’t want to put a lot of acrylic paint down the drain. I do rinse what is left on these trays and re-use them.

In addition to other things to paint (like the wooden eggs—see this post) I give her other things to manipulate the paint with. Plastic pallet knifes and old gift cards are fun because you can carve back into wet paint. Great for pre-writters, and I’d bet learning to write kids as well.

I’ve come up with a few other things to make putting paint on the canvas enticing. Shown above I added big circles that Tuesday can fill in. She is really into me drawing shapes or lines so that she can color in and around them. I’m not sure if it’s a developmental thing but I find it really interesting. She almost always prefers to color on something that has lines on it already versus a blank piece of paper, a complete 180 from a few months ago where she would make one mark and then need a fresh page. Another thing I’ve done is add texture. So far I just put a little gel medium in with the paint and really glob it on so it will be bumpy when it dries. I also found a stucco paint on clearance that I’m going to mix in and try.
Remember:

art is messy (pants I made Tuesday with the Silhouette and pom-pom trim). It’s supposed to be messy. So just have a full change of clothes (you and your kid!), including socks, and you should be good to go.

Next up: how to photograph your kids’ art and have the coolest desktop wallpaper around.

I love Saturdays

Especially last Saturday as our favorite people from Alaska were down to visit (and are still here, yay!). Tuesday got to see a sleeping Chloe when her mom and grandma stopped by to pick up a highchair and travel crib on their way in from the airport. This was so NOT COOL MAMA! She wanted to see the real live moving around and having fun Chloe who we talk to all the time on the computer (via a logitech application). When we told her Chloe would be at the Saturday market she was just busting. The market is the highlight of her week as it is so this just sent her into a super happy place. And when she caught site of Chloe?

She wouldn’t stop hugging and kissing her… until she knocked her over (whoops!). We got to walk around with Carmen, Chloe, and her grandparents for a while and got some yummy food. We ate in front of live music, because the market is in full swing now.

Dance party!!!!
After the exhausted girls went down for naps Carmen and I went with our moms to the spring version of Crafty Wonderland (I guess I failed to blog it, but my friends Kristen and Sciarrino both blogged about our fun time in December). This time I bought less and took more photos.

A lot of the vendors were the same, including this one: Muluk. I know many of you wanted to know where I got Tuesday’s red and white stripped hat in these photos, well it’s from here!

Carmen and I both had one thing we had to find: gifts for our moms (and yes, they were with us, so we had to be stealth). We zoned in on the jewelry right away. I loved all these earrings at Betsy and Iya (oh no, I thought I got her card, Carmen do you remember?). Carmen ended up with a fun pair from the half off rack. Check out this action shot.

She put them on right away, of course. I SO SO SO need to get my ears re-peirced! This was another great booth, again I’ll have to get the name from Carmen (she bought the necklace she’s holding from her mom). It’s Seaworthy

This one I do remember: Sarah Treslstad Jewelry Design. I got my mom the beautiful necklace she is wrapping up.

We saw lots more than jewelry though, like this booth with interesting yarn. She has spun stuff, but this was actually a combo of a lot of yarns tied together.

Row Boat Press was one of my favorites during the holiday show and they didn’t disappoint this time. I picked up a new print of theirs that says, “You’re my best friend” for Bj.

Another favorite booth of mine, Trusty Sidekick. I didn’t get anything this time, but Tuesday wore one of her capes and shirts for her second birthday at Disneyland. I mentioned that her etsy shop didn’t have a lot of colors to choose from, she told me that she is happy to take custom orders, so check it out!

I did end up getting Tuesday two things. Felt pancakes from Pickle Things. My pancake loving daughter thought they were the coolest. I also picked up five stained glass pendants for the play space downstairs. Megan from Ta-Dah let me pick out any five pendants and then strung them together for me. I love them so much (ok maybe this was a little bit for me too)!

I didn’t get anything just for me, though I was tempted by these beautiful repurposed vintage wears from Glam Garb. She dyes, refurbishes, and embellishes vintage delicates. I wanted one of those petticoats bad. I just have to figure out how I could pull off the look…
I know this is craft fair season just about everywhere, so look up to see if you have one nearby. I recommend it for custom and unique gifts, decor, jewelry, toys, and fashion. Support local artists and buy local and handmade, it’s great all around!

I chose to sew

So on national scrapbook day I didn’t actually scrapbook. I’ve got a pretty serious tea party coming up and am currently consumed with making Tuesday the cutest dress up skirt ever, so fun. I do have a scrapbook related thing to share. I finally set about to organize my mists.

I actually did this a few weeks ago, in anticipation of buying a few more at a sale, so I had to put them on a bigger jump ring. It’s hanging on my board in my studio and making me very happy. Some of these are Glimmer Mists so they catch the light and sparkle.

This was really easy to do. I simply cut 2 inch squares out of my favorite cardstock: white orange peel texture Bazzill and kraft cardstock. I figured they were the ones I used the most and the mist would show up so different on each that I should have samples of both. I was random with the amount I sprayed on the paper, but I went to a local scrapbook store that had one spray on one side and three on the other, a really good idea. After they dried overnight I wrote the name of the mist on the back and punched a hole for stringing onto a large binder ring.

Now that I have this done I am using my mists more than ever. I just sprayed a bunch of white paper flowers and am going to try to work them into cute hair clips for tutu. Now I just have to work on getting some kind of system down for my stamping ink.
How about you, did you do anything for national scrapbook day?

zig zag love

I made a simple layout yesterday for my mom’s ribbon link party.

I love this sheet of pattern paper, and was happy to use it on this layout. Just some random scraps of pattern paper, one of my fuzzy hearts, a journaling tag, the metal rimmed tag, some letter stickers and sewing (just got my machine back yesterday from servicing, yay!).

I used a lovely grosgrain ribbon that actually isn’t in stock at the ribbon jar right now. I want to try this ribbon on a layout in the future. I’m not sure how thick it is, but that texture and color, YUM!
So notice anything different about this layout?
I’m participating in Color Chic’s “better with ribbon wednesday”…. but even if you don’t have a project with ribbon (any kind of project and any kind of ribbon!) to share go over and leave a comment because she’s having a giveaway from Ribbon Jar’s 6th birthday!

Happy to him!

Yesterday was Bj’s 29th birthday, happy, happy!

I love a stack of presents, don’t you? Too bad I always wait until the last minute to wrap them so we only get to see them for about a day. I am really trying not to buy any more wrapping paper. The black bag has been in rotation for a while (mainly between Sciarrino and I), the white box is a nike box, with a well placed tag, the brown package is a bag from a Studio Calico kit, and the robots are fabric from a blanket I need to make.
Tuesday and I did make cards, but we got distracted by coloring outside and I forgot to take pictures of them.

I can’t blame the outfit on Tuesday today.

I picked up some jeans at a thrift store and they keep falling off her tiny hiney. I remembered these suspenders (flashback!) and put them to actual use.

When kids attack photographers!!!
We went out for Bj’s birthday to a cook in front of you place. Tuesday enjoyed it immensely.

First of all she seems to love Japanese food (thank goodness!) so we knew she’d eat anything, but watching the chef cook was amazing to her.

And when it came time to pay, she helped us out like always.

She is extremely serious about working on receipts… until she gets distracted by waiters…

Ah totally worth it. A great day to celebrate my love!
